Required Veterinary Documentation

Every dog entering the kennel must be vaccinated for

Rabies

Bordetella (kennel cough)

Parvo, Distemper, Adenovirus and Corona virus

Girardia (optional)

Proof of vaccinations must include a computer printout of your RECEIPT .

All shots must be within 12 months of admission unless your vet advises that your vaccines are effective for 2 years. This information must be on your documents.

Special
note re: Bordetella.

Bordetella is commonly known as kennel cough. It is an air-borne virus that is easy to spread in a kennel, dog show, grooming salon or park. The bordetella vaccine is an intra-nasal vaccine and must be given no less than SEVEN days prior to the arrival day if it is the first time the vaccine is being given or if it is being updated after a lapse of more than a year.

On the whole, coming to kennel does not involve risk of illness to your dog but there are some things you should know.

Once in a while, a strain of kennel cough will come into our area that the vaccine does not protect against. Most dogs do not succumb to the new strain but if your dog is older or if he has poor immune status…recent illness, allergies, poor diet…he may become ill.

Girardia

In the Spring, especially, girardia is everywhere…in melting snow and in the rivers and streams. It is so easy to ingest this bacterium as dogs root and sniff often during walks.

There is now a vaccine available from your veterinarian for girardia.

We wash all of our stainless steel dog dishes and drinking pails with Dettol daily.

Each dog uses the same indoor and outdoor kennel during his/her stay to help prevent cross contamination.

Floors are washed daily.

Dogs do, however, use the same exercise yards. The individual runs are separated only by chain link so there can be transfer as dogs nose each other. A completely sterile environment is not possible or desirable.

To position this in your mind, just realize that there is some small risk but it is HIGHLY UNUSUAL for any dog to become ill.

In all the years of operation, we have treated 4 dogs. 2 came down with bordetella (their vaccines were up to date) and 2 showed symptoms of girardia (both were unvaccinated)

Puppies

Dogs less than 20 weeks old will NOT be admitted to kennel.

Until a dog is 5 months old, the maternal antibodies given in the mother’s milk interfere with the efficacy of the shots you give.

Follow your vet’s advice as to what shots are required and when.

Food

foodIt is imperative that you do not change the diet while the dog is at kennel. Please bring the EXACT brand that your dog is used to.

Bring your food in labeled plastic containers or labeled bags. You may wish to include a measure and a feeding schedule.

We do not leave food in front of the dogs all the time. They are given 15-30 minutes to eat and then the dishes are picked up. In order to encourage appetite, we may add a little hot water and some canned meat or chicken. Nothing will be given to your dog without consulting you first.

Food Choices

We have noticed over the years that dogs who come in on poor diets like grocery store brands often have health or temperament issues that disappear when the food is upgraded.

We recommend feeding kibble with no grains.

Evolution brand, a California based company, and Orijen of Alberta both offer a high quality food with high quality protein and no grains.

We offer diet and supplement suggestions for all dogs. There is no charge for this service.

Food Supples

Raw diets with the proper supplementation are highly recommended and there are no extra charges for any food regimen. We have agreat respect for those of you who feed your dogs a diet tailored to meet their needs.

Kibble can be brought to kennel in bags or containers. Please bring more than is required as there is some discretion on our part to keep the dog in good shape. All unused food will be returned.

Medication

medicationPlease provide complete instructions for the proper administration of shots, drops or pills for dogs who are on medication. If at home you use a special food to camouflage the pills, bring enough with you to last the length of the stay.

There is no charge for the administration of medication.
